Belgian sends pretty greetings from Melaka

'Greetings from Melaka' is the fifth book on the beautiful state written and published by Walter Francois, 67.

The former banker from Belgium has returned to Malaysia countless times since his first visit back in the mid-1990's.

Of his first four books, two were on Malaysia in general, one on Langkawi and one on Selangor.

This time, Francois has collaborated with fellow Belgian, Steven Timmermans, who was fascinated with Malacca even before he arrived in the country.

The result is a captivating book filled with arresting photographs by Francois and accompanying text by Timmermans.

No less than 183 photographs allow the reader to get acquainted or reconnect with the historical gateway for merchants and traders from around the globe.

At the same time, numerous facts and legends complemented by images of early maps and picture postcards attempt to take the reader through the city's intriguing history.

The out-of-the-box approach, where academic jargon is demystified and replaced by the occasional humorous wink, makes the book a delightful read for the young and old.

The book is a fine tribute to an amazing city and a must-have for anyone fascinated by the past and present of the historic state.

For more than 20 years, Francois has tirelessly promoted Malaysia to Belgians and others around the world.

He left behind his career as a banker to explore Malaysia and has recorded his visits through stunning photographs.

He has seen more of Malaysia than many Malaysians, and has made his experiences accessible to all by documenting and presenting his travels in books.

In Belgium, he staged nine photo exhibitions on Malaysia. One was held in Malaysia, in 2002, in conjunction with a visit from the Belgian Trade Mission.

Over the course of over 60 extended visits to Malaysia, he has happily contributed to the Malaysian economy, but his promotion of the country is even more meaningful.

Timmermans, a long-term resident here, has also promoted Malaysia and her products via numerous websites and social media. His flagship site is presently the largest overseas website on Malaysia.

The glossy coffee-table book, priced at RM188, is available at bookstores.
