About the photographer

Walter François, 61, is a Belgian amateur photographer from the city of Ghent, Belgium. A retired banker, François has always shown great interest in Southeast Asia. He has travelled extensively to various parts of the region and has seized every opportunity to promote the region to his fellow countrymen.

Since 1979, François has been to Malaysia more than 40 times. His love for Malaysia culminated in the publication of his first coffee-table book “Walter François presents MALAYSIA.” It was an instant success, with more than 3,300 copies sold. This motivated him to publish his second one “Walter François presents LANGKAWI, Island of Mysterious Legends” and he will soon be publishing his third coffee-table book on Malaysia. Promoting Malaysia and her beauty – has always been a personal initiative for François has never asked for sponsorship for his books. His only desire is to make Malaysia better known in Belgium, and at the same time, make Belgium better known in Malaysia. Therefore, in cooperation with the Belgian embassy, he has organised here in Kuala Lumpur his first Belgian photo exhibition.

About the exhibition

In this exhibition, François will be displaying some 50 pictures on his hometown Ghent, which is the third most important city in Belgium. The historical and economic importance of Ghent was considerable in the Middle Ages. Ghent was even, in those ages, after Paris the second biggest metropolis in the world. Today, tourists from all over the world come to Ghent to witness its ancient glory.
